The historic Christian season of Advent is the journey from darkness to light. Old Testament priest Zechariah once dumb struck for doubting the plans of God and the father of John the Baptist, sets the stage for our Advent journey. In our text for the morning, Zechariah breaks into song when he proclaims, “And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Highest; for you will go before the face of the Lord to prepare His ways, to give knowledge of salvation to His people By the remission of sins, THROUGH THE TENDER MERCY OF OUR GOD, WITH WHICH THE DAYSPRING FROM ON HIGH HAS VISITED US; TO GIVE LIGHT TO THOSE THAT SIT IN DARKNESS AND THE SHADOW OF DEATH, TO GUIDE OUR FEET INTO THE WAY OF PEACE.” Zechariah speaks poetically of God’s character as “tender mercy” and goes on to foretell God’s action in sending the “Dayspring from on high”, literally the dawn or sunrise, in the person and work of Jesus Christ.
